Portoroz, Slovenia

- Robin Mckelvie

Friday, midday

Check in to the palatial Hotel Kempinski Portoroz, (doubles from £131, www.kempinski.com), a grand old dame that was brilliantly brought back to life in 2008. Book an Adriatic view room with a terrace.

1pm

Ease along the waterfront to Ribja Kantina Santalucia. Kick off with Istrian truffles with pasta before a sumptuous seafood main.

2:30pm

Work off the pounds with a dip in the Adriatic. The platforms and piers have been joined by imported sand so there are plenty of places to splash in.

4pm

Stroll the promenade conjuring up images of the genteel citizens of Vienna who once came to Portoroz to take the spa waters.

7:30pm

Dine out at Rizibizi, one of the best restaurants on the coast. Try sea bass with truffle and a glass of local wine.

Saturday, 11am

It’s a lovely 3km walk along the sea to the picture postcard historic neighbouring town of Piran.

Midday

Stop off at Ribja kantina pri Polonci. Dine on the water’s edge with perfectly cooked spaghetti and clams. All their shellfish is superb. Decent house Malvasija white wine too.

2:30pm

Hike up to St George’s Church, a religious edifice that dominates the town and offers superb vistas. Admire the view of three countries, with Croatia and Italy in sight.

4pm

Ease back down to the waterfront and skip the slew of cheesy restaurants to end up at Caffé Teater. They can mix a mean cocktail and have refreshing Slovenian beer Lasko on draught too.

7pm

The Kempinski’s grand Sophia awaits with a tasting menu to delight the senses. The seafood tasting menu is slightly lighter. Whichever you choose, opt for the matching wines.

Sunday, 9am

Head to the spa for a Himalayan salt massage, a sublime treatment that will rub away all your tension. Afterwards a bubble in the hot tub or swim in the outside pool tempts. ■ Easyjet (www.easyjet.com) fly to Ljubljana from London Stansted starting at £69.78 return. Hire a car at the airport from Holiday Autos (www. holidayautos.com) and Portoroz is around 90 minutes away. For more information see www.slovenia.info

In the magazine of 5 October we mistakenly identified the alternative Bute ferry from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay as the Claonaig ferry. This is incorrect. The correct route is from Colintraive to Rhubodach.
