#SPEAKER

MPS were electing a new Speaker of the House of Commons yesterday.

@Briefcasemike said: “A key pitch from the candidates so far seems to be ‘I won’t be anything like Bercow’, which is rather unfair since, for all his many faults, Bercow was a great and reforming Speaker.”

@Getrealtoday echoed: “As the #speakerelection is held, let us remember the hero we’ve just lost... who knows what state the country would be in without him? #Johnbercow”

@DGH_V3 said: “I reckon all the candidates for #Speaker should shout ‘Order, Order’, with the other MPS voting on each. Highest vote wins. Something akin to #Xfactor.”

@surfwagen wrote: “He should be over 6’ tall with a voice like Richard Burton. Or a lady with a voice like Lauren Bacall. And neutral.”

@Scepticalgospel wrote: “I don’t understand why reducing the time for PMQS is a good thing? I want it to go on longer, more backbench questions, and a refusal to accept deflections as answers.”

@Monarchy UK noted: “Chris Bryant: ‘I want to stop the clapping.’ MPS clap.”

@Marcusstead tweeted: “Harriet Harman is playing the ‘there’s only ever been one woman Speaker’ card. Yes, and Betty Boothroyd was the best PERSON for the job. When she retired, the late Gwyneth Dunwoody should’ve got the job. She had no time for people who played the ‘woman’ card.”

Boris Johnson expressed “deep regret” for failing to meet 31 October Brexit deadline

@The5ballover wrote: “Not his fault. Corbyn and Labour should apologise.”

@Chezney92 agreed: “What happens when you have MPS who will block everything because they don’t respect democracy.”

@Ronaemi replied: “He made a promise he didn’t keep, no ifs, no buts.”

@Paulriches8 added: “He voted down two deals.”

@1973graeme said: “That wasn’t an apology. That was an acknowledgement that he failed.”

@Blunderbusshb wrote: “It’s not his fault that he lied to the electorate, made a promise he couldn’t keep, unlawfully suspended parliament and misled the monarchy.”

@Endyhamwendy said: “Do the right thing and resign.”

@Iansmith163 said: “UK expresses ‘deep regret’ for having Boris Johnson as PM.”
