Ayr wrap up under-18 title with 11th win on the spin
With two rounds of the Shogun Conference remaining Ayr/wellington have done enough to wrap up the under-18 title after achieving their 11th consecutive victory with a 64-0 win over Highland at Millbrae on Saturday.
That gives the Ayr side a perfect 100 per cent record in the Shogun Conference, but one which could be torpedoed this weekend when the Millbrae team travels to Bridgehaugh to play Stirling County. On Saturday, County powered past Hamilton to score almost a ton of points.
It has been a torrid season for Hamilton but at least after their amalgamation with Livingston at under-18 level the club is able to field a team in this age group.
Another club struggling at under-18 level is Perthshire, who were overrun by Boroughmuir at the North Inch in a match that ended in a 69-0 win for the Meggetland side. Muir’s tries included a hat-trick from wing Jeke Canakaivata (3) and a brace from full-back Finlay Hood (2).
Perthshire, however, turned the tables in the under-16 match by achieving a 24-17 win against Boroughmuir. The other Shogun Conference match between Biggar and West of Scotland had to be called off after West’s bus broke down.
In schools rugby, Merchiston reached the final of the under-16 cup by beating George Watson’s College 13-7 on Saturday.
Merchiston will meet Dollar Academy in the final, Dollar having achieved a 12-10 semi-final win over Stewart’s-melville College at Inverleith.
Meanwhile, in the U18 Shield competition, for teams knocked out in the third round of the Cup, Merchiston Castle beat Boroughmuir32-12atmeggetland yesterday and will face Heriot’s in the final on the back pitches at Murrayfield at 2pm a week today.
Heriot’s reached the final with a narrow 7-5 win over Dundee High School at Mayfield. Cameron Davison scored for Dundee High and prop Xander Mcmillan for Heriot’s, Oliver Mcallister converting.
