Mitchell try helps Hawick to turn the tables on Currie

- By GARY HEATLY

Hawick back-row Bruce Mcneil was pleased with how his team played in tough conditions and defended well at the death to defeat Currie Chieftains on Saturday.

The Greens were thumped at Malleny Park earlier in the season but this time they came out on top 20-14 at

Mansfield Park. “We knew this would be a tough, physical match and so it proved,” the experienced Mcneil said. “I think we handled that well and getting another win keeps our decent run going.”

A try by Logan Gordonwoolley, converted by Ali Weir, made it 7-0 to Hawick. Cammy Meager was then yellow carded for Currie and a Weir penalty made it 10-0.

A second penalty from him made it 13-0 before a Currie

try from Reece Patterson, converted by Adam Hall, made it closer at the break.

Currie’s Mattias Argiro was yellow carded in the second period, but it was they who scored next when Mike Vernel scored a converted try.

Kirk Ford of Currie was then yellow carded before Hawick’s teenage centre Andrew Mitchell bagged a converted try to win it for the hosts.

Centre Andrew Hughes excelled as GHA became the first team to defeat leaders Marr. James Edgar and Adam Kerr scored the tries and Jamie Mackinnon kicked seven points in the 17-15 win in Troon.

Edinburgh Accies and

Musselburgh drew 28-28 at Newfield. Selkirk are in fourth after continuing their great recent run of away form by winning 16-14 at Aberdeen Grammar, while Jed-forest won 16-15 at Balgray against

Glasgow Hawks.
