Midweek fixture ideal for Neilson as United try to build ten-point lead at the top

Dundee United manager Robbie Neilson is relishing tonight’s rearranged game with Morton because it gives his side the chance to move ten points clear at the top of the Ladbrokes Championship.

The Tannadice side returned to action on Saturday after a three-week gap and beat Alloa 2-1. “It was good to get back,” said Neilson, “and after winning we move on positively to Morton. I was pleased with the performance and effort as well as how we handled going behind. We will need those attributes again as Cappielow is a tough venue – as Morton’s home record shows.”

Morton are looking to bounce back from losing 3-1 at Dunfermline at the weekend. “It will be tough and if we keep giving teams opportunities, we will lose goals,” said manager David Hopkirk. “No-one is cutting us open but individual mistakes are hurting us.

“We will be ready to go again against Dundee United. It will be a difficult contest and we simply cannot keep giving away silly goals.”

In tonight’s other fixture, Ayr United manager Mark Kerr is set to start as Arbroath visit.

Kerr had been concentrating on management since replacing Ian Mccall in October but the 37-year-old made a substitute appearance on Saturday.

After defeats by Dunfermline and Inverness in the past week,

Kerr is keen to help his team this evening. “I have to be realistic and when you are down to a squad of 13 players due to injuries, I have to take a bigger part on the pitch,” he said.

Arbroath, who drew 1-1 with Dundee on Saturday, can join Ayr in fourth if they win. “I do not think there will be many changes to our line-up as it was a terrific performance,” said boss Dick Campbell.
