Musselburgh on the climb

- By GARY HEATLY

Musselburgh head coach Graeme Paterson praised his side’s effort and application as they defeated Glasgow Hawks on Saturday to take themselves off the bottom of the Tennent’s Premiership.

Rory Watt, Craig Owenson, William Fleming and Luke Hutson were the try scorers for the hosts in East Lothian while Danny Owenson kicked the other points as they secured a crucial five points with a 29-20 triumph.

“The guys put in a huge amount of effort and application to get us over the line,” Paterson said. “The players have put in good performances recently without perhaps getting the desired results, so this was a fitting reward for those efforts.”

Lyall Archer and Max

Priestly scored tries for Hawks in defeat.

Leaders Marr came out on top 14-3 at Currie Chieftains, but it was the second placed home side who got off to a flier with Gregor Hunter giving them the lead with a penalty.

In the 14th minute strong forward play by Marr saw Richard Dalgleish go over for the opening try with Colin Sturgeon converting.

Currie captain Fergus Scott was then yellow carded before Marr scored their second try just before halftime through Ollie Rossi. Colin Sturgeon again converted and it was 14-3.

The second half was a tight, physical battle up front and both sides lost players to injury, but Marr held on.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Hawick over Selkirk, Jed-forest over Aberdeen Grammar and GHA over Edinburgh Accies who are now bottom.
