United wait for news of Mctominay knee injury

Scotland midfielder Scott Mctominay left Old Trafford on crutches with a suspected knee ligament injury after being substitute­d midway through his team’s 4-1 victory over Newcastle United.

Booked after just 24 seconds, the fastest yellow card given in a Premier League match since time data has been collected, Mctominay, below, was replaced by Paul Pogba at half-time.

“I don’t know how bad it is,” said United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. “The boy has got the biggest heart of the lot. We’ll find out how it is.”

Matty Longstaff opened the scoring for the visitors, but two Anthony Martial goals either side of efforts from Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford wrapped up three points for Solskjaer’s side.

Liverpool extended their lead at the top to 13 points with a 4-0 win at secondplac­ed Leicester City.

Firmino scored twice, James Milner converted a penalty and Trent Alexander-arnold wrapped up a convincing win for Jürgen Klopp’s men. Frank Lampard bemoaned Chelsea’s stuttering home form following a 2-0 loss to Southampto­n at Stamford Bridge.
