#IAINDUNCANSMITH

Tens of thousands of people have signed an online petition demanding that Iain Duncan Smith be stripped of his knighthood hours after the announcement.

@virgosam70 snorted: “All you need to know about Britain. Iain Duncan Smith gets knighted and congratulated. John Bercow, honourable man, gets no peerage, first Speaker in 230 years not to do so.”

But @Paulwhelan745 felt: “Iain Duncan Smith thoroughly deserves a knighthood for services to the Tory party. He’s not being knighted for anything else.”

@Peoplesmomentum disagreed: “To the millions who suffered at the hands of Smith’s shameful welfare reforms, this knighthood is a clear slap in the face.” And @Peterstefanovi2 added: “The architect of Universal Credit, which has left thousands of families struggling to pay bills & buy food, caused untold suffering, misery & despair, left children hungry, is to be knighted. Welcome to Boris Johnson’s ‘golden age’.” However, @Stevewickens1 pointed out: “Unfair to accuse Iain Duncan Smith. He resigned because he objected to Government cuts to welfare.” @Faymoody seemed to sum up the popular feeling: “To reward Iain Duncan Smith in such a manner, after he led actions that caused suffering to so many, is inexcusable.”

#BERNARDCRIBBINS

@E80NYANGEL enthused: “Happy 91st birthday Bernard Cribbins, OBE. Why is it not Sir by now? Great to know my son shares the same birthday as you!”

@snapperjack11 agreed: “Give IDS knighthood to Bernard Cribbins; 100% more worthwhile ...” A relieved @Funkym_fm217 commented: “Y’all gave me a heart attack when I saw Bernard Cribbins trending! Imagine the relief when I find out that it’s just his birthday! Happy Birthday, sir!”

@Steffols tweeted: “Bernard Cribbins should have the same protected status as David Attenborough. Happy birthday to the living legend!”

Dr Who enthusiast @ Tardisteam63 celebrated: “Happy birthday to the one and only Bernard Cribbins, aka the iconic Wilfred Mott #Doctorwho.”
