Singer songwriter Skye Edwards
What’s the last piece of clothing you bought?
I’m making a dress from the embellished sheer tulle fabric that a friend sent me from a shop called Mood in LA. I’ve been in search of ‘nude’ underwear to wear underneath. As a brown skin girl, this isn’t something you’ll find on the high street. Thankfully, I came across this online brand called Nubian Skin. They have everything from bras to hold up stockings.
What are you addicted to buying?
Fabric! I have my ‘woman cave’ sewing room with my machine and rolls of fabrics and ribbons and tassels. I make the outfits that I wear on stage, and for each new album. I’m married to a Scotsman, so I always like to include a tartan outfit. I’m very lucky to have a friend who owns a kilt shop, Neil Selbie & Co in Peterculter. Whenever I need tartan fabric, he gives me mates’ rates.
Best ever bargain?
I find the best bargains on ebay. I bought a huge handira (Moroccan wedding blanket) on there. Good ones are usually over £200. I got mine for £60.
Who has great style?
Tilda Swinton. She’s cool, without being in your face.
Name your favourite high street shop.
Boots is my go-to shop.
Any fashion disasters you’d care to tell us about?
When I was around 20, I found this cute little white hat in an Oxfam charity shop. Little did I know, that hat was a skull cap usually worn by Muslim men. More of a mistake due to lack of knowledge!
What’s your favourite item in your wardrobe?
My apple-coloured Kirk & Kirk glasses. n
