you are coming from... The poll clearly shows there is no appetite for a referendum for many years, even if the SNP get a win in 2021. The poll also clearly shows that the majority who polled in favour of independence are deluded enough to think that Isolated scotland would stay in the EU, which is just plain wrong.

What Sturgeon needs to do is get a written guarantee from the EU that on leaving the UK there would automatic admittance to the EU. Do that and I suspect there will a seismic shift in a Yes vote.

Andrew Murdoch

First of all she’d have to meet those of influence who would actually take her seriously. To date she hasn’t done that. As for getting a written guarantee from the EU, you’re deluding yourself. Unless you think flying a pointless flag will do the trick as Sturgeon obviously does.

Old Man of Hoy

The underlying thing to note is that well over half of those polled are not interested in a referendum in 2020. This is good, as they won’t be getting one.

Luckie Mucklebackit

Independence is inevitable – and Brexit and the undemocratic manoeuvring around it by various Tory governments only strengthens the case.

Robert Sim

If there was a poll in England asking if we want shot of Scotland there would most probably be a majority to the view of Yes, after the way the SNP whine and moan about the English, and can also be quite racist towards us. But if the vote was put in motion it would not happen. Yes, we get fed up of the constant griping from the SNP, but we know we are better together... and the majority of Scots are a good bunch of people.

Wow. Break out the champagne and go home to your constituencies and prepare for independence! One poll in 5 years – does anyone really think Sturgeon will bet the farm on that one?

Defrocked Reverend One poll does not make the trend that Nicola said would be required. If memory treats me correctly, was the trend she required not for over 60 per cent of Scottish voters wanting indy for a sustained period? A sustained period will mean months, not days.

Gavin Beattie The traffic is all one way, No to Yes. I’ve yet to hear a credible conversion from Yes to No. All this and we haven’t even left the EU yet. After we leave the EU people will finally realise they can’t have both unions, and it becomes a clear choice. Comparing the attitude of the two unions over the last 3 or 4 years will give clarity. Scotland ignored, overruled and sidelined by Westminster. Ireland included, and first and foremost in the EU’S negotiations at every turn.

Labour leadership hopeful Emily Thornberry has apologised for saying she hates the SNP, insisting that the remark was made in the “heat” of the moment.

I have no problem with Thornberry for hating the SNP. It’s most of her other views that I have a problem with!

Reality Demands To Be Heard I too hate what the SNP have done to the country of my birth but feel no need to apologise for it.

Novabears2 She doesn’t have to apologise to me, nor another 800,000 plus Scots.

Sally Fraser

I never ever thought I would agree with Emily Thornberry. On this, I do.

Perhaps more unionist politicians should show a similar degree of soul searching and contrition. Never too late for redemption, even for the most ardent supporter of the increasingly failing UK – repentance can be liberating.
