15-year-old apologises to Dons’ Logan for online racist messages

- By SCOTT DAVIE

Aberdeenbossderekmcinnes has praised Shay Logan for the way he handled the latest incident of racial abuse the rightback has been subjected to.

Six years ago Celtic’s Bulgarian winger Aleksander Tonev was given a seven-game ban for racially abusing Logan during a match at Parkhead.

This time the Dons star took to social media to share details of the slurs targeted at him online after Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Rangers – which turned out to have been sent by a 15-year-old boy.

An account called “rangerspics”, sent Logan a picture of a boy, with the words surrounding him stating: “Don’t care, plus you’re black.” That was then followed up by another Instagram user sending a similar meme. This time it said: “Mummy, why is that man made of chocolate?”

Loganrespondedbypointing out just how many key players in Steven Gerrard’s side were also black and, on the positive side, the youngster responsible got back in touch to apologise for trolling the Dons defender.

Mcinnes said:“i spoke to Shay this morning and the way he’s dealt with it has been absolutely spot on. He reminded the boy his own club have black players.

“He is a 15-year-old boy and he is full of remorse now, so I think there has to be some understanding of that. He is a young boy, but he should know better.

“He has come to his senses, contacted Shay, he’s full of apologies and has told him he’s very embarrassed by it.

“I think the way Shay has dealt with it was first class. Shay has been the victim of racist abuse many times in his life and has handled it well.

“If there can be a positive outcome from something like this then this is it. Racial abuse in this day and age is ridiculous, it really is.”
