Livestock marts to remain open
Despite the cancellation and postponement of many local and national agricultural shows, meetings and other farming events, the livestock auctioneer’s trade body has stressed that marts remain open and are trading normally.
The Institute of Auctioneers and Appraisers in Scotland (IAAS) said that its members were introducing all possible safeguards during the coronavirus outbreak in an attempt to minimise disruption to trade while also protecting the health of staff and customers.
While the organisation said that it would comply with fast-changing government advice, it asked that only those conducting direct business entered marts – and that everyone attending followed the latest public health advice, including that surrounding hand washing and social distancing.
“However, people displaying any symptoms of Covid-19, who have had contact with those displaying symptoms or who have recently returned from high-risk areas are being asked not to attend marts,” said IAAS executive director Neil Wilson.
But he added that auctioneers were on-hand to support those in groups deemed as vulnerable and had been advised not to attend any public gatherings to discuss what arrangements could be put in place to allow them to trade livestock and ensure continuity to their businesses.
“While the backdrop is concerning for every business in every sector, auctioneers across the country are on-hand to help vendors and purchasers through any issues they face,” he added. “They have the support of the Institute to provide a safe environment for the trading of livestock, which is a critical part of Scotland’s rural economy.”
