#SIRKEIRSTARMER

Sir Keir Starmer will succeed Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader after winning in the first round of votes. The deputy leader of the party will be Angela Rayner. The man himself @Keir_ Starmer tweeted: “It’s the honour and privilege of my life to be elected as leader of the Labour Party. I will lead this great party into a new era, with confidence and hope, so that when the time comes, we can serve our country again – in government.” However, @socialist1959 replied: “Congratulations. Can we now look forward to the publication of your donors’ names please? The time limit must be just about up now.”

@Cznofeverywhere welcomed the appointment: “Labour chose the wrong leader in 2010, doubled down in 2015 and missed an opportunity to put it right in 2016. But now, after 10 dark and painful years, we’ve put them back on the right track. Rejoice! We’ve taken our party back!”

A huffy @c_love888 commented: “Three memberships from my family cancelled!”

@mishtal added: “You can root out the poison of antisemitism or play games and pay tribute to Jeremy Corbyn. You cannot do both.” Cynical @polarpete607 wrote: “You haven’t got a hope in hell to become a government. Get rid of the loony left and Momentum and get back to listening to the grass roots then you might have a chance in a couple of decades.”

@Luckyheronsay commented: “Labour was founded on socialist principles because of a need to make society fairer. That need has only grown. Many on the left will give you a fresh start and back you but only if you don’t move to the centre. Your move.”

@Andrewknight226 opined: “Congratulations! @ Keir_starmer. You have the support of Remainers. Please don’t disappoint us. We need a leader to stop the Tories, to stop Brexit and to rejoin EU.” An optimistic @

Mikemar82888097 chimed in: “At last we have an adult in the room. Johnson’s days are numbered.”

@shewolf1877 warned: “Get rid of the Corbynistas and anti-semites or never see Labour in power again.”

@rec777777 reckoned: “So a white middle-class male millionaire who betrayed all his Leave voters is now in charge at Labour. What could possibly go wrong?”
