The architect behind Edinburgh’s proposed new £50m Filmhouse “film temple” has pledged it will be a match for the city’s great cultural buildings

– as it emerged that giant video walls, open-air events, an outdoor cafebar and an auditorium visible from Lothian Road are planned as part of the project.

As a Filmhouse member I can appreciate the current building needs replaced or completely modernised. However, this new building does look like it has just been dumped in a random spot with little regard to the surrounding architecture.

I have not yet formed an opinion on this building, though my first reaction is a bit negative. I need more time. However, I am certainly not that interested in the architect’s opinion. He is certainly allowed to blow his own trumpet but he will not be deciding on the merits or otherwise of his designs.

Neil Chalmers

Horrible, especially in this location. It looks as if it’s been dropped there with absolutely no thought for the surroundings whatsoever, and sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb.

An 11-storey building! A monument to an art form for the 21st century! Are these statements meant to reassure? They actually scare and are pushing boundaries. It certainly isn’t necessary to have such a large ‘monument’. A building of this size would infringe on every other building in the area, for example the Usher Hall, even the Sheraton. It’s actually nice to see some space on a city street. The whole idea is out of order, it would just ruin another part of the city. I hope this difficult time is not being used to push forward plans while the council is not fully operational and the public are distracted.
