Dominic Raab says he has “full respect” for Black Lives Matter campaigners after he was criticised for comments suggesting that taking the knee “seems to be taken” from TV drama Game of Thrones. He also said it feels like a “symbol of subjugation”. Comedian @Baddiel said: “Those startled by the fact that Dominic Raab, the Foreign Secretary, doesn’t know the history behind taking a knee should perhaps remember he also didn’t know the history behind the UK being an island.”

@davemacladd posted: “Dominic Raab has further clarified that the Suffragette who threw herself under a horse was definitely in Breaking Bad.”

@Julessunbeam countered: “Thank you Dominic for saying what so many of us are thinking.”

@Flub1957 commented: “He does , one hopes, realise that as an MP, he serves his constituents, and as a minister, he serves the nation. The levels of hubris and arrogance that he exhibits are astonishing.”

@bass4themasses said:

“Ridiculous dog whistle to appease the Tories’ nationalist base. Wilful ignorance like this is an insult to the public he is supposed to serve.” @gallop_scot added: “I abhor racism in every sense of the word and treat everybody with the same level of respect they show me. I served my country, all of my country, for 31 years. I will not take a knee.”

#DAMEVERALYNN

Tributes poured in after Forces Sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn died at the age of 103.

@ronaldspall said: “I grew up during the war and she was an ever-present encouraging personality.”

@simonjgarret posted: “The word icon is often too easily used but I think it’s beyond dispute that Vera Lynn was one such.”

@moomin24134264 commented: “You will always be remembered for your huge contribution to morale during the war and beyond, a beacon of light for so many.”

@Karintynelius added: “You passed away on the very day when, 80 years ago, General de Gaulle made his appeal for French resistance on the BBC. We’ll meet again.”
