Spend a penny

Edinburgh City Council’s leader Adam Mcvey has urged the public not to treat the city’s parks and green spaces as “rubbish dumps” and “urinals” after major concerns were raised by residents at the weekend.

Councils the length and breadth of the land have had to cut back on public toilet provision, among many other services. It’s due to government cutbacks on council finance. Blame Westminster austerity policies. That’s now coming back to bite the Tories on the bum. And before any blame is placed at Holyrood’s door, Holyrood is also financed by Westminster. I’m so annoyed that more of a song and dance is not being made about the real reasons for these cutbacks.

Henry Campbell Gillan They are selling all the buildings for profit on the quiet! Sold the one in Corstorphine without putting it on the open market! Should be a public inquiry – remember, we own these buildings.

And I’d urge Mcvey to reopen all public toilets, including those the council previously closed “to save money”. Adequate provision of toilets is a basic public health necessity. It was squandered on trams, of course.

This will obviously happen when there are no toilet facilities... it’s not rocket science.

Kevin O’neal If Germany can open public toilets, so can we. It’s a basic right for the residents, but of course, people must do their bit.

Marlene St John Ayre They should open all toilets, but have attendants, like they did in times gone by. Only let a couple in at a time, and spray down the cubicles each time they are used (obviously wearing protective clothing/visors/ masks etc).

Eileen Wylie

It is a shambles that Edinburgh Council don’t have more public toilets, especially around the city centre and other attractions. Even ones that have a small charge would be welcome and easily pay back their maintenance costs over one sunny weekend.

Bill Grainger-simpson

How many public toilets are left in Edinburgh? They have closed most of them.

Wilma Macleod

There are very few public toilets for a city of this size.

Charalampos Koundourakis They need to open so we can wash our hands more often, not just go for a pee. Guidelines are wash hands as often as you can. Well, where can you go if places are closed?

Margot Hadden They keep spending money on things we don’t need! Tourists and locals need toilets open in public places, not closed 24/7.

Frank Power Ah, so he knows how the public feel about the council now! Fantastic.

Mike Shogunai If the public toilets are closed, where are you meant to go?
