Iconic R&A Clubhouse earmarked for revamp

Plans for a multi-million pound revamp of the iconic R&A Clubhouse in St Andrews have been unveiled.

According to The Courier, the major modernisation will more than treble the accommodation space in the historic building but will not change its facade.

The R&A reportedly considered relocating to new premises, but it was felt that its location overlooking the first tee and 18th green on the Old Course should not be given up.

The proposals include 450 combined male and female lockers, as well as bag storage areas catering for up to 500 golf bags and trolleys.

Currently, women members make use of a lockerroom at Forgan House, a short walk from the clubhouse.

A family-friendly meeting area to assist in the promotion of junior golf is also part of the ambitious plans, which include new safety measures as well.

Rising bollards are to be installed around the area to provide security against terrorist attacks.

A spokesperson for the R&A told The Courier :“In a review of existing R&A clubhouse facilities offered for the use of members, and their effectiveness in operation, it has been concluded that the existing golfing facilities need to be reconsidered to improve their nature and extent.

“It has been established that the clubhouse is more frequently used by members throughout the year than has been the case in the past and that the facilities are no longer adequate to cope with demand during the spring and autumn meetings hosted by the club.

“In addition, it is considered imperative that all members, including women members, can use golfing facilities located within the clubhouse.”

It is not known if the work will be carried out in time for the 150th Open Championship on the Old Course in 2022 – a year later than orginally scheduled.

The R&A Clubhouse took 11 months to build after the foundation stone was laid in July 1853.
