Own goal

Two weeks in and the football season already has a backlog, thanks to the idiotic behaviour of players who are apparently too stupid to understand the concept of rules.

These games should not have been postponed – they should have been forfeited by the clubs whose players were blatantly to blame. Then let the clubs concerned dish out a suitable punishment, having lost the points. But as things currently stand, the opposing teams such as St Johnstone might well question the fairness of being asked to play a rescheduled fixture midweek, with all the risks that a short turn around poses to teams of more modest means than some others.

But we are where we are. Moving forward, however, I would hope that the SPFL will, as a mater of urgency, consider imposing a forfeit on teams who, through the actions of their own players, are unable to fulfil their contractual commitment to the league. The potential loss of income from getting it wrong might focus all the clubs’ management teams rather better than seems to be the case at present.

Of course, the idea of league positions being dependent on games which haven’t actually been played isn’t something the SPFL would ever endorse ...er... isit?
