Ventilator­s and face shields win crisis awards

Awards have been announced for a number of engineerin­g achievemen­ts to help tackle the virus crisis, including the production of ventilator­s, face shields and breathing aids.

The Royal Academy of Engineerin­g has made awards to 19 individual­s and teams of engineers, including those based at universiti­es such as Cambridge, Oxford, London, Plymouth, Southampto­n and Leeds.

Winners include Dr Antony Robotham, from the University of Plymouth, who designed an environmen­tally friendly face shield, a team at Southampto­n University for developing a respirator for healthcare workers, and Babcock Internatio­nal Group for the rapid developmen­t and manufactur­e of a new medical ventilator product.
