#VJDAY

Saturday marked the 75th anniversary of the surrender of Japan, signifying the end of the Second World War. Senior members of the Royal Family led tributes to the veterans.

@Kitemanx noted: “The Kohima Epitaph with the Last Post always get me...”

@Mrsellersteach tweeted: “Good to see all the street parties for VJ Day commemorating the people who were suffering in the East 75 years ago. Oh, wait...” A bitter @bazzergolf commented: “I was watching the service until that idiot of a PM stood up to speak. I had to switch off.”

@maggie_gilbert contributed: “Thinking about my dad, Peter Mcguire, who served with 356 Squadron Royal Air Force in South East Asia during WW2. He rarely spoke of his time there but would have taken time today to reflect and remember.”

@Davidfranks claimed: “Don’t let the BBC delude you – the main reason why many Africans and Asians were fighting against the Imperial Japanese Army was previous greedy British imperialism.”

@linds_alder summed up the feelings of many: “We haven’t got much of that generation left and boy, were they heroes. Watching the wreaths laid all across the Far East as well as in the UK was extremely poignant.”

#GENERALANNE

Princess Anne has been promoted by the Army and Royal Air Force to mark her 70th birthday. The Princess Royal will take up the role of general and air chief marshal. Cynical @Imranbristol1 reckoned: “Priti Patel will probably go on to ask her if she can organise a military force along the Southeastern coast.” Fashion-conscious @ Bouvierstringer added: “I wish she’d do something new with her hair. Been like that for years.”

@mandy66392138 commented: “The hardestworking royal, well done, Princess Anne.” @NBTTBM disagreed: “The whole point is she’s only in the role and getting honours because of her birthright and not abilities. Sure, she is a great person. But I know lots of great people who don’t get promoted just because they have a birthday.”

@finklepepper chuckled: “She was probably retrospectively awarded three As for her A Levels, too.”

@Blkforestgirl concluded: “I always felt that she should be the next Queen.”
