Winter wallaby: Rare snow falls as south-east Australia is hit by blast from the Arctic

People in the south-east of Australia have been experiencing rare snow falls caused by a front of polar air.

Areas of New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania are among those to have experienced wintry blasts. “We’ve seen light snow make it to Canberra today, and yes even heard a few rogue flakes landed on Parliament House,” the Bureau of Meteorology said on Twitter.

The bureau said that more than one metre of snow had fallen in a number of alpine regions, with the cold weather set to remain for several days. Images of the snow have filled social media in recent days.
