Trump Jnr’s Biden jibe – ‘He is basically the Loch Ness Monster’
● Nessie trending on Twitter after president’s son launches attack
Donald Trump Jr has compared Joe Biden – the Democratic candidate in the 2020 US presidential election – to the Loch Ness Monster.
In comments made at the Republican National Convent ion on Monday night, the eldest son of incumbent US president Donald Trump claimed the former vice-president would keep the money of Americans in a “swamp”.
He also accused Mr Biden of “lurking around” like the legendary creature of the Highlands, saying the Democratic candidate only “sticks his head up every now and then to run for president”.
In the televised address, Mr TrumpJr said :“After eight years of Oba ma and Bid en slow grow th, Trump’s p oli - cies have been like rocket fuel to the economy and especially to the middle class.
“Bid en has promised to take that money back out of your pocket and keep it in the swamp.
“That makes sense though, considering Joe Biden is basically the Loch Ness Monster of the swamp. For the past half-century he’s been lurking around in there.
“He sticks his head up every now and then to run for president, then he disappears and doesn’t do much in between.
“So if you’ re looking for hope, look to the man who did what the failed Obama-biden administration never could do and built the greatest economy our country has ever seen.
“And President Trump will do it again.”
His comments meant the phrases “Loch Ness Monster” and “Nessie” were trending on Twitter.
However, Drew Hendry, SNP MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badeno ch and Strathsp ey, welcomed the comparison.
He tweeted: “As #Nessie’s MP, I would say this comparison wins it for Biden.
“He’s effectively saying it’s a choice b et ween a globally beloved and sought-out icon, which has enhanced the reputation of its homeland and continues to enchant billions, or Donald Trump.”
Mr Biden’s poll lead against the incumbent US president has narrowed in recent weeks, but the Democratic candidate still appears to be the favourite to win the November vote.
Mr TrumpJnr’ sN es sie comparison came as it was revealed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sent a cable to all US diplomatic missions last month warning American diplomats that under federal law they should not take overt sides in the presidential campaign.
Mr Pomp eo was planning to yesterday ignore his own warning by speaking to the Republican National Convention endorsing Mr Trump for a second term.
Despite State Department assurances that Mr Pompeo will be speaking to the convention in his personal capacity and won’t violate the Hatch Act, Democrats and other critics have cried foul. They accuse the country’ s top diplomat of inappropriate political behaviour that has been anathema to his pre dec essors and of trashing his own admonition to State Department staffers.
