Poor old council?

-

A funding shortfall of more than £17 million is currently being faced by Edinburgh City Council, according to new figures.

Yet this disgraceful organisation is being allowed to railroad its misplaced antimotorist and anti-resident policies through.

John Monaghan They should do a crowd funder everywhere else does. Although I’m not seeing how they can be so short caused by coronavirus when they are still collecting all council tax, rents, licences, registrations and other fees for administration, along with a substantial additional payment from the Scottish Government. Yes they have additional costs to reopen schools but their offices are still closed, public toilets are closed, rubbish collections were reduced during lockdown, garden rubbish collections were temporarily stopped, libraries are closed, also buses were reduced, sports centres are closed and council-run museums are closed, which they contribute to. Less fuel bills, less routine maintenance and all staff furloughed, which they are not paying for.

Caroline Crawford Councils always plead poverty but you never see it affecting their salaries or expenses.

David Black I don’t know what it’s spent on! They don’t cut grass often, collect bins as much, weed the city – and don’t get me started about the state of the roads!

Alan Mclaughlan

They have loaned money Stephen Mcculloch to loads of others. Only this Maybe if they hadn’t wasted council could do that when well overskint.abillioninrecenttheyare yearsh they would have some elen Lee-keenan

money in reserve. Also, A £17 million black hole, every time some company but still money for the tram has cutbacks, included in extension. This should be the redundancies are many the first thing scrapped as it management posts, they is wholly unnecessary given being the higher earners, the limited area it will cover but doesn’t happen in CEC and the excellent bus service due to Labour’s policy of no already in place that will redundancy. be decimated by the trams. They certainly can’t blame the £17 million black hole on having fixed the roads and pavements.

Shan Dan

Maybe they should’ve thought about finances when they decided to pay out millions for unnecessary trams. We have a perfectly good bus service, and there’s the expense of narrowing roads for cyclists. It’s time the council/government concentrated on more important issues!

Eileen Mylie

Time to cut down on the management wage bill and stop expenses claims. Or will they just cut services and meaningful jobs again?

Paul Clarkson

And where is all the money the festivals are supposed to have brought into the city? Residents have had to put up with months of disruption, year after year, and now it looks like there’s nothing to show for it.

Lucien Romano

Take a wage cut, like everybody else has to.

Norrie Gray

Just wondering what they have done with the money saved from all the office staff on furlough and offices closed down. That has to be a fair amount by now. Basically six months of savings.

Pauline Downie

And yet more cycle lanes and trams. Oh, the wonderful muppets who run our council!

Tam Bruce It’s hardly unique to Edinburgh. The cost of social care throughout the UK is a huge issue.

Ralph Macgillivray Why not call back the money that they lent to other councils throughout Britain? That’ll more than make up for the shortfall.

Heather Ford

Another calamity from Mcvey and co!

Ronnie Wood I can smell a council tax rise coming!

Norman Henderson

They won’t run short of money for the new tram line.

Heather Millar Stoddart

Please tell me we have enough money left for the cyclists.

Allan Squair Poor council tax payers. In Edinburgh the council tax will go through the roof next year. Start saving.

Brian Nicol

Next time a business wants to build any student accommodation or a hotel, hit them with a £17m levy.

Lee Noble

After 12 years of austerity councils will soon become extinct.

Chick Macdonald Just ask the SNP for a tap. I’m sure they’ve got loads stashed away that they got from Westminster!
