Oh crumbs
In response to Colin Hamilton (Letters, 26 August), I would like to point out that the UK has not protected Scotland from any economic downturn in the past or present.
We are currently in yet another recession (the worst yet) which, apart from Covid, seems to be cyclical every ten years.
The economic model works for some but not for all and that is something we can address as a fully functioning, self-governing independent country.
To propose that the UK acts in all benevolence to provide an economic buffer is the stuff of fantasy, since oil revenue has been squandered not saved; Scotland pays a fortune in tax; billions is wast
ed on Trident and on unnecessary wars; working people are turning to food banks UKwide and much investment has been focused on the South East of England for as long as I can remember.
If you want the economy to do better in the long term then we require full control of our affairs in order to put Scotland first.
There is no dignity in await
ing the crumbs from Westminster’s table, or worse still, believing the spin that we aren’t capable of the job.
