Top qualifier Lindsay falls in round of 64 at Birkdale

Top strokeplay qualifier Rub en Lindsay failed to make it through his first round of matchplay at the 125th Amateur Championship at Royal Birkdale.

The Ayr Belleisle 16-yearold was beaten 2&1 by Ilari Saulo of Finland, who also disposed of England’s Sam Bairstow 3&1 in one of the four first round matches in the morning.

England’ s Benjamin Schmidt, the top ranked player in the field at 35 on the World Amateur Golf Ranking, beat Brandon Dietzel of Germany 3&2.

The 18-year-old will face Callan Barrow in to day’s third round after the Englishman defeated S cot Lewis Irvine of Kirk hill 2&1.

Three other Scots also bowed out, Stuart E aston of The Irvine lost by one hole to England’s Joe Harvey, Balmore’s James Wilson was beaten 3&1 by Gregorio De Leo of Italy and Andrew Davidson of Charleton was beaten one up by Frederick Kjettrup of Denmark.

Two Scots are left flying the flag, Darren Howie of Peebles,w ho beat Engishman Harvey Byers one up, and Castle Park’s Connor Wilson, who defeated Kevin Christopher Jegers of Estonia by one hole.

Finnish amateur champion S au low ill now go head-to-head with Victor H. Sidal Svendsen of Denmark who won by one hole to progress past Ben Chamberlain of Wales.

Thomas Plumb, a member of the 2019 Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team, moved through to the last 32 thanks to a 4&3 victory over Robert Moran of Ireland. Plumb will now face fellow English man Call um F arr in the third round after he progressed by defeating Davide Buchi of Italy by one hole.

Having qualified for the matchplay stage by a single stroke, French man David R avetto, who won the Brabazon Trophy last week, faced English Amateur champion Jack Cope. Opening with a birdie, Ravetto went one-up after the first before winning the match 5&4. He will now play Marc Hammer of Germany.
