Trunk call: German zoo’s first baby elephant finds out her name after public poll

The first elephant to be born in Er fu rt Zoo in Germany has been named Ayoka, after a public poll produced 1600 suggestion­s. Africa ne lephant Ayoka was born to mum Chupa on 5 August , after a pregancy lasting 666 days, and will be kept at the zoo’s 11,000 square meter enclosure — the largest for elephants in Germany. Her first outing coincided with World Elephant Day, dedicated to the preservati­on and protection of the world’s elephant sand employees at the zoo have gone to great lengths to make the elephant house “child safe” , including securing safe access to the 1.8-metre-deep bath.
