California burning: Campers rescued and evacuation ordered as wildfires cut off resort

A helicopter drops water at a wildfire in Yucaipa, California, as three fast-spreading blazes sent people fleeing, with one trapping campers in the Sierra National Forest.

More than 150 campers were rescued from the site, media say. At least a dozen were hurt, some with serious burns.

T h e C r e e k F i r e b e g a n o n Friday in the Sierra National Forest, cutting off the Mammoth Pool Reservoir, 40 miles north-east of Fresno. The temperatur­e has hit 47C, part of a record heatwave in the state.

M a n d a t o r y e v a c u a t i o n orders are in now place for a number of areas in Madera County.
