Orwellian fear

-

In reply to Carolyn Taylor (Dreadful legacy, Saturday5th September) far from being “flippant” regarding the number of deaths and number of confirmed cases, my point was not to demean the tragic losses and the other health issues attached.

But then why would a nationalist supporter pay any attention to the core of my argu - ment when it is far easier to throw some horrible st ats around to deflect from the main thrust of my argument?

The numbers quoted by Ms Taylor are indeed terrible – but let’s put these into perspective.

42,527 deaths equates to 0.06 per cent of the UK population, 340,000 cases 0.51 per cent of population.

Not quite so scary when one look sat the bigger picture I would suggest.

The main thrust of my argument is therefore highlighted by the very use of figures to increase fear, anxiety and the perpetuation of these Orwellian social restrictions.

It is high time we understood that this is not going away, that we must revert to the old normal as soon as possible and get on with our lives.

Those who feel vulnerable should do as they see fit and be assisted in ever y way they require to stay healthy and safe.

There st of us, the overwhelming majority should be able to get on with the lives we led before this pandemic took over the heart and mind of our governments.

And yes, I also mean the Scottish government, with the daily caterwauling of doom laden stats, threats of further lock

downs if we are naughty and don’t abide by “the rules”.

In my humble opinion, the experiment is sadly working.
