Being silly

Jane Lax (Project Smear, Letters, 5 September) says Scottish independence would be an economic disaster and that without Westminster’s pandemic funding for furloughing staff and supporting businesses, Scotland would be on its knees.

That’s silly. The Bank of England was able to borrow billions, which is what sovereign governments are supposed to do during times of crisis. An independent Scotland would have its own central bank and currency and be able to do the same, just as other small European nations have done during the pandemic.

If Iceland, with a population the size of Edinburgh, can prosper, why wouldn’t Scotland

Finally, the economic impact of B rex it will deep en and lengthen the current recession, result in a fall in investment, higher prices, as inking pound and to short ages in food and life-saving medicines. And a trade deal with the US will gut UK food, safety and environmental standards and lead to a sell off of the NHS.

Canny Scots understand it’s time to get out from under this union that’s crushing us.
