Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis has said a new bill to amend the UK’S Brexit deal with the EU will “break international law”. He conceded it would go against the treaty in a “specific and limited way”.

@csav55 said: “Interesting take on breaking the law – yes I’m breaking the law but only in a specific way (what’s a non-specific way of breaking the law?). New defence strategy coming to a courtroom near you any day now.”

@Catiomiles asked: “Can the government provide a list of laws we can break?”

@Evancull responded: “Whichever you feel like as long as you think it’s in a small and limited way . . .”

@Markjam40032666 posted: “I’m looking forward to explaining to my local supermarket security that I when stole the booze it was only specifically Martell and I could have taken the one litre bottle so quite limited really.”

@ekctafc commented: “An ilegal change to a treaty we have signed up to, a treaty that we cannot be legally change unilaterally. Hmm, I think this is going to go down really well on the international stage,. Why should any other nation be able to trust us to keep to our obligations?”

@Chrisjulien said: “So it’s like civil disobedience? But wasn’t that just labelled a criminal activity? I’m confused!”

@Ciarian75 posted: There is no breaking the law in a very specific and limited way. You either break the law or you don’t. You either punch someone or you don’t. There is no halfway house.”

@Waggadoo said: “So if I robbed a small bank it’d be all right, in the same way as driving 300 miles up the road in lockdown and 30 miles to check eyesight . . . I spot a trend here . . .”

@Themorganics posted: Who is going to follow guidance and rules when our own government won’t abide by rules it has signed up to? Recipe for disaster for the UK.”

@Pafo1972 added: “Quite unbelievable. It will be interesting to see the reaction of all of the Tory backbenchers.”
