Hogg suffers injury scare

- By ANDREW BALDOCK

Scotland captain Stuart Hogg limped out of Exeter’s 35-22 Premier ship win over Gloucester last night.

The full-back had a problem with the top of his right leg and went off in the second half. Exeter for wards coach Rob Hunter said: “We will wait for 24 hours. We are being fairly cautious.”

Scotland full-back Stuart Hogg picked up an injury as his side Exeter booked their place in the Gallagher Premiership play-offs with three games to spare by beating Gloucester 35-22 at Sandy Park.

The runaway league leaders posted a seventh successive Premiership win and look unstoppable as they target a fifth Twickenham final appearance on the bounce.

A Gloucester team showing 15 changes battled hard but ultimately could not contain their op ponents, with Exeter scoring tries through hooker Luke Cow an-Dickie, number eight Sam Simmonds, lock Jonny Hill, wing Ian Whitten and scrum-half Jack Maunder.

Captain Jo e Simmonds kicked five conversions, and the only down beat note for Exeter was see - ing Hog g limp off in the 55th minute. He pulled up after an Exeter attack, with his early departure coming 10 days before Chiefs’ Heineken Champions Cup quarter-final against Northampton.

Gloucester briefly led by a point after former England wing Matt Banahan’s try and a Billy Twelvetrees penalty, while Ban ah an added a second touchdown and flanker Josh Gray also crossed, with Twelvetrees landing two conversions.

Sale made it four Premiership wins in a row for the first time since February 2016 with a 24-17 success over Saracens at the AJ Bell Stadium to stay on course for the play-offs.

Steve Diamond’s men had the game sewn up by halftime when they led 21-7 and, although the bonus point eluded them, the result was enough to keep them in pole position for a second-place finish.

With Wasps and Bristol winning earlier, defeat was unthinkable for Sale and, with two of their last three games at home, their destiny remains firmly in their own hands.
