- By KATRINE BUSSEY

TV chef Nick Nairnh as said the corona virus lock down has left his business on “life support ”, as he warned he will have to make some “pretty tough decisions” if the UK Government does not extend the furlough scheme for the hospitality sector.

Chancellor R is hi Sun ak introduced the initiative, in which the state pays towards workers’ wages, as Britain went into lockdown, but it is due to be wound down in October.

A UK Government minister said yesterday that the scheme has “done its job”, but there are increasing calls for it to be extended.

The Scottish Government has made repeated calls for the Job Retention Scheme to continue, and MPS on the Commons Treasury Select Committee have urged the Chancellor to consider a targeted extension.

Scotland Office minister Iain Stewart said businesses will still benefit from other forms of support once the furlough scheme ends.

Speaking on the same pro - gramme, Nairn said the end of the furlough support will lead to a “very tricky time” for his business.

He said :“We’ re looking at long-term survival, the end of the furlough, the end of October for us is going to be a very tricky time. If there was a possibility of a sector-specific extension to help us get to Christmas... we are really taking it a month at a time and the aim is survival.”
