Church influence
We see that on the agenda of today’s Edinburgh City Council meeting is the following: “1.1 To note the resignation of Monsignor Anthony Duffy as the Roman Catholic Church representative on the E ducation, Children and Families Committee and to record appreciation for his work…”
Mr Duffy no doubt has worked hard to promote his views on the committee, but what might those have been? The many anti-scientific beliefs of religion will have cast little light on Biology or Physics classes.
The Catholic Church’s wellknown illiberal attitudes must have been hard to square with schools committed to sexual and LGBT equality.
Item 1.2 on the agenda appoints Mr Duffy’s successor and reminds us of the elephant in the committee room: “To note the NOMINATION by the Roman Catholic Church of Ms Margaret Therese Laing…”
A new unelected re ligious nominee sitting at the table with voted councillors reminds us that this gross democratic deficit has not gone away.
