Peers ask for clarity on overriding of Brexit bill

- By HARRIET LINE

Peers have demanded the UK government provides an urgent explanation on why it is prepared to override key elements of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.

Boris Johnson was this week f orced to agree to t able an amendment to t h e U K I n t e r n a l Mar - ket Bill giving MPS a vote before the government can use powers which would breach t he Withdrawal Agreement.

But the Lords EU Committee has written to Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove demanding clarity on the bill. It has asked whether it remains the government’s view the bill “does break international law in a very specific and limited way”, and has requested evidence to back up Mr Johnson’s claim the EU had not acted in good faith. The committee has requested a response by Friday.
