Oh darn it!

-

The society envisaged by Iain Gulland of Zero Waste Scotland ( Perspective, 17 Septem

ber) is reminiscent of life in the 1930s and during the war when make do and mend was the norm.

How this would play in our more hedonistic socie - ty where a holiday abroad is regarded almost as a human right and significant numbers fail to exercise self discipline in the face of a dangerous pandemic, is difficult to see.

Also contradictions are likely to arise. For instance Mr. Gulland speaks well of how “green” Scotland’s grid now is but that was built with steel from China, which runs on coal.

I’m not against what Zero Waste is trying to achieve – I still darn socks. I just doubt if it is practical politics.
