Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak announced new measures to support jobs and businesses as stricter Covid-19 restrictions come into force.
@Bigmarkyb wrote: “You could have ended tax avoidance and given everyone a Universal Income to see us through. Covid and Brexit is going to see millions lose everything and tax-avoiding corporations gobble up their life’s work on the cheap.”
@Jamie_orourke added: “This. Not only will big corporations gobble up the small businesses / consumers but the rich will be buying up all of the houses on the cheap as people can’t pay their mortgages, and lose their homes.”
@wearerrainco tweeted: “So, the government gets to decide which jobs are ‘viable’, probably dictated to by their cronies in big corporations, and everyone else gets thrown under the bus. Pretty much anyone freelancing or self-employed are on their own now.”
@yogurtraisin wrote: “Here is the simple and best solution. Make all working people over 65 retire immediately ( they are the most at risk), pay them their normal state pension and let younger people get their jobs or move some others up the pecking order and younger ones come in at the bottom.”
@RK972153017 said: “Haven’t missed a day of work since lockdown. Anything for me?”
@Stu0099 asked: “And what are you doing, Rishi, to support people like myself who have already lost their jobs through no fault of [their own]. The Governments restrictions on international travel effectively closed our business down, look forward to your answer and support.”
@mjkennington said: “Haven’t work a day since March. Struggling to remain afloat. Wondering why Sunak didn’t mention taxing the likes of @facebook@ instagram@apple on their UK income to help pay for this. Mark Zuckerberg’s personal wealth is over $90bn – and partly made off UK income! Just an idea.”
@markn said: “Once again doing absolutely nothing for anybody unable to find work because of Covid, this is the worst government this country has ever had.”
@dotroworkdalek said: “Only interested if you’re going to start taxing the rich!”
