What’s the last piece of clothing you bought?

A cashmere scarf that I got at a designer friend’s sample sale. It’s gloriously soft and the most wonderful shade of emerald green.

What are you addicted to buying?

I love a silk scarf and have a collection of them – they are fabulous for adding a pop of colour or dramatic pattern to any outfit.

Best ever bargain?

A gorgeous silk Marni top I bought at the Antique Fair at Ingliston for £ 8. For £ 15 at a flea market, I also got an incredible Seventies diaphanous black Frank Usher evening dress with huge organza sleeves.

Who has great style?

Helen Mirren – she always looks effortlessly elegant, and Sally Phillips, who has more of a quirky look and wears a lot of small independent brands.

Name your favourite high street shop.

I tend to shop from independent designers, small boutiques, designer sales, and vintage – you find more interesting pieces which are made with more care and last longer. Open studio events can be a great way of discovering independent designers. Every city in Scotland has these creative hubs where you can pick up beautiful handmade jewellery, garments and accessories direct from the maker.

Any fashion disasters you’d care to tell us about?

My teenage years are full of them. The white leather mini skirt and Bon Jovi perm are probably ones to be glossed over.

What’s your favourite item in your wardrobe?

In the winter it’s my teal faux fur jacket and Pickone scarf. ■
