ARTIST # 14: LACHLAN GOUDIE

-

In April this year, as a result of the Covid- 19 pandemic, the 2020 edition of the Edinburgh Art Festival had to be cancelled. However, as Edinburgh and its vibrant visual art scene begin to emerge from lockdown we are delighted to present this new weekly showcase, produced alongside Edinburgh Art Festival, featuring work by artists with digital and/ or physical exhibitions at the city’s galleries.

Lachlan Goudie’s forthcoming exhibition at The Scottish Gallery presents a new collection of works that bring fairy tales to life, along with landscapes and still lifes designed to make you daydream. As we all tried to deal with the surreal world of lockdown, Goudie escaped into the art of his imagination, while watching the seasons change and the landscape alter, and he has been strongly influenced by the nightly ritual of reading fairy tales to his daughter to send her to sleep. Together they journeyed into stories of Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, and the snow- covered landscape of Disney’s Frozen and these imaginary worlds feed into his work.

“Each day during lockdown my daughter demanded to wear one of her garishly coloured ‘ princess dresses’ as she accompanied her mother and younger brother on walks in in the local countryside,” says Goudie. “Clementine’s singleminded enthusiasm, her determination to inhabit this fantastical world, was hugely powerful and uplifting at a difficult time.”

Lachlan Goudie – Once Upon a Time runs from 28 October until 25 November 2020. The Scottish Gallery is open by appointment only. Please visit scottish- gallery. co. uk to book.
