Derby intensity will still be present even if fans aren’t, says Hibs’ Jack Ross

- Moira GORDON

Hibs boss Jack Ross does not believe the absence of a derby crowd will dilute the intensity of today’s Scottish Cup headto - head with Capital rivals Hearts.

With the usual pride as well as a place in the final at stake, he believes there will be no let up on the pitch, although he is hoping that the lack of noise emanating from the Hampden stands will allow for a more controlled performance from his players.

“Will i t be slightly different than if there were 50,000 there? Of course, it will and it’s impossible not to make a nod towards that. But I certainly don’t think it will be hugely different,” said Ross, who has a record of one win and one defeat in his two Edinburgh derby matches at the helm.

“The reputation of the fixture is thoroughly deserved. The intensity of that match, the atmosphere that is usually generated, is outstanding. Only people who get the privilege of being inside the stadium fully comprehend that.

“But, we have seen it, not just with the big games in Scotland but in all games, in all leagues, there are less poor decisions made by players based on emotion [ in the absence of fans].

“Sometimes the atmosphere i nside stadiums can affect players and affect their decision- making. That is human nature and it is probably why there has been more structure and more discipline.

“Whether that will be the case [ in this one] is difficult to predict. The fact it is a semifinal and the fact it is a derby means it is still going to be an intense occasion.”
