Tributes to ‘true talent’ of comedy

John Sessions has been hailed as a “true talent” following the death of the actor and comedian.

The star, who was born in Largs, Ayrshire, enjoyed a career across TV, film and the stage.

He was known for regular appearance son shows like QI, Have I Got News for You and Whose Line Is It Anyway? and his work on Spitting Image.

His agent Alex Irwin said in a statement: "It is with great sadness we can confirm that on Monday, the actor John Sessions died at his home in south London.

"He will be hugely missed." Sessions also appeared on QI and Have I Got News for You.

The actor's big-screen credits included The Good Shepherd, The Merchant of Venice and The Bounty.

He was also known for his surreal performanc­es on his one-man TV shows.

Recent TV drama credits included Victoria, The Loch and Mr Selfridge.

The official QI Twitter account paid tribute, saying: "His incredible wit and encyclopae­dic knowledge played a huge part in the show's history and everyone at QI is deeply saddened to learn of his passing."

During his career, he provided voices on Spitting Image in the 1980s - the only person to both provide impression­s and be featured as a puppet on the satirical show.

The programme was among the trailblaze­rs of alternativ­e comedy, he told BBC Radio Scotland in September. "You really felt you were at the cutting edge of comedy," he said.

His impression­s were also at the hear t of Stella Street, a spoof soap opera about megastars like Keith Richards, Jo e Pesci and Roger Mo ore who lived on the same suburban road, which launched in 1997.

Sessions recalled meeting Richard sand the other members of the Rolling Stones. "They watched the show," he told Radio Scotland ." Keith said he really enjoys it and he's thinking of getting a little corner shop."

Hearing the news, Laurence Fox, who starred alongside Sessions in Victoria, said: “Dear God, no! He phoned me the other day to check in and tell me that he’s there if I ever need him. What an absolute diamond of a man.

"Always there for you. Absolutely hilarious. Always kind, always gentle. What a lovely friend. Goodnight dear John.”

Broadcaste­r Danny Baker shared a poster for radio series Beachcombe­r... By The Way and wrote on Twitter: "Shocked to hear that John Sessions has died at 67.

"Terrific company always and a true talent. His roles at the heart of this, my favourite radio series, have given endless pleasure to me and will continue to do so always. Travel easy, chum."

Actor and writer Robert Webb paid tribute to S essi on sand fellow co median Bobby Ball, whose death was announced at the weekend.

The Peep Show actor tweeted: “Bobby Ball and now John Sessions! Two very different performers who both abso - lutely inspired and delighted me at different times. Lovely, funny men.”

Blur musician Graham Coxon said: "John sessions... was mega bright and funny.. that's a great shame. RIP."
