ARTIST # 17: RHONA JACK
In April this year, as a result of the Covid- 19 pandemic, the 2020 edition of the Edinburgh Art Festival had to be cancelled. However, as Edinburgh and its vibrant visual art scene begin to emerge from lockdown we are delighted to present this weekly showcase, produced alongside Edinburgh Art Festival, featuring work by artists with digital and/ or physical exhibitions at the city’s galleries.
Born in Edinburgh in 1993, Rhona Jack now lives and works in Dundee. She graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in 2017 with a BA in Fine Art and since then she has developed a practice which centres around craft and process, working between sculpture, printmaking and fibre art.
Jack is one of four artists invited to show work at this year's Platform: 2020 exhibition, organised by
Edinburgh Art Festival. She is presenting a range of large- scale textile based sculptural works, taking the form of stitched hangings, woven rugs and elements of soft sculpture. Reconstructed and crafted from a patchwork of recycled scrap fabrics and items of clothing, the work draws attention to our relationship to textile production, consumption and waste, contrasting consumerism with the personal narratives that we put upon clothes made in their millions. Discarded clothes hang in space, cut and stitched together, but still holding a suggestion of the people who wore them. The work is soft and playful, retaining the familiarity of the domestic while also considering the global economics of garment manufacturing.
Platform: 2020, presented by Edinburgh Art Festival, runs at the City Art Centre, Edinburgh, until 29th November
