The UK and EU agreed to carry on post-brexit trade talks after a call between leaders yesterday. In a joint statement, Boris Johnson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said it was "responsible at this point to go the extra mile".

@uterguy90 said: “Great job Boris. The EU are now starting to break. The UK has been calling their bluff over no-deal, and they are now showing their true cards. They are now seeing the UK will walk away with pride and confidence, and they are petrified. We have them at their knees now!”

@copeman_matt responded: “I thought you were being serious there for a second! Love a bit of dry humour.”

@Tiniesttiger commented: “Goodness, @Borisjohnson

is an absolute disaster. He should resign or call a general election. The UK would never have been in this situation if mature, dignified, knowledgeable and non-corrupt folk had been in government.”

@george_1992 posted: “Whatever the outcome, this has been an embarrassment to British statecraft. The Tories have a mandate till 2024, but senior party members will surely start looking at a Boris Johnson replacement A woeful response to Covid, compounded with Brexit chaos. We can't continue like this.”

@guypearson1 observed: “Do those moaning about Johnson want or expect him to give away rights to British waters just to get a deal through?”

@Martyns5 said: “What is the point of all those deadlines? Tory ideology means they cannot accept anything offered by the EU and neither side wants to be seen as the one that brings it to a halt.”

@bass_n_bass responded: “The only real deadline is 31 December. Talks will go right up until then.”

@Dawlishchief posted: “Let's hope they actually talk, not stare at each other. Common sense sats a bit of compromise is needed on both sides if your serious, you'll find a way.”

@Palebluedotben commented: “How about cancelling the whole Brexit thing, going down the Winchester for a pint and wait for all the rage to blow over?” @Damian_hunt addded: “Can anyone please tell me what our government did before Brexit and Covid?”
