Morton bounce back from Hopkin’s departure to stun Pars

Dunfermlin­e’s unbeaten start to the season came to an unexpected end with the Fifers going down 2-1 at home to a visiting Morton side still reeling from manager David Hopkin’s decision to walk away from his job on Thursday.

Chris Millar, one of the trio of experience­d players helping stand-in boss Anton Mcelhone since Hopkin’s depar - tu re, watched on from the side as the two others,Brian Mclean and Jim Mcalister, helped the Greenock outfit take the lead on 24 minutes.

Mclean headed on a long throw-in from Lewis Strapp and Mcalister hooked the ball home to stun the hosts.

Morton thought they had notched a second on 70 minutes, but referee David Munro decided that Kalvin Orsi’s effort had not crossed the line and Dunfermlin­e made the most of that reprieve four minutes later.

Munro awarded a penalty for a handball by Aidan Nesbitt and Declan Mcmanus drove the spot-kick home.

Thoughts that the Pars would go and win were off the mark as, just five minutes later, Craig Mcguffie turned in a rebound after Strapp had seen a shot saved by Owain FonWilliam­s

Mcelhone said: “This result is not for me. The players that David Hop kin put to ge ther won the game and I am pleased for him that we won.”

Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Dundee drew 2-2 with both camps believing their side should have won. Liam Fontaine tapped the Dark Blues into the lead on 37 minutes after Jordan Mcghee’s header had struck the bar.

With 18 minutes left, Robbie Deas hooked in an equaliser and just three minutes later James Keatings turned the ball home from six yards to have Caley ahead with Dundee manager James McPake angered that offside was not awarded.

Jordan McGhee calmed some of Mcpake’s anger when he side-footed into restore parity.

Arbroath now sit at the foot of the table after Al lo a left Gayfield with all three points following a 1- 0 victor y. In a game of few chances, the winner came 11 minutes from time when Stefan Scougall’s shot squeezed under Derek Gas ton and crept over the line.”
