Boris Johnson has vowed to focus on "levelling up the country" and "spreading opportunity", after securing a post-brexit trade deal with the EU. He claimed the deal would "deliver for people who felt left behind".

@Grassman47 said: “Tories have no interest in ‘levelling up’. Their only interest is to get richer and richer at the expense of the poor. Hint: Food banks were unheard of before the Tory Party totally dominated British politics.”

@Trommulrich posted: “‘Levelling up the country’ is a slogan which is conveniently vague. What does it mean? When will it happen?”

@concannon commented: “Excited to find out who the Tories are going to blame for their failures now they can't pin everything on the EU.” @chrisrory replied: “It’s going to have to be a combo of Lizard People and phrenology.”

@craigveigh remarked: “Looking on the bright side, just think how much the NHS will benefit from receiving that extra £350 million per week.”

@Slumdogmuhandis said: “The latest mantra – “levelling up” – is both amorphous and vacuous. There is no meaningful accountability/ end point as to when this is to be achieved. Perhaps he should begin with ‘levelling with’ us all.”

@dwchappie observed: “Realistically, he has until the end of 2023 to make a difference. Otherwise it’s bye bye borrowed votes, hello minority or hung parliament come May 2024.”

@Clslwyn posted: “This is possibly the most audacious lie that he has ever spouted. As if being in the EU was the reason we have nurses going to food banks, billionaires ripping off the public purse and a cabinet composed of old Etonians. Give me strength.”

@wickyclive said: “Our fun PM wants an Eton College in every town, and why not? It hasn’t done him and Jacob Rees-mogg any harm.”

@jankubis asked: “Does he mean levelling the country? That would make more sense.”

@Sovafelo commented: “PM to focus on hollow buzz words while standing in a warehouse in a hi-vis jacket.”

@B2BMIKEW added: “By ‘levelling up’ he means ensuring everyone has the same probability of catching Covid due to his ineptitude.”
