German striker Quaner brings ‘ real good pedigree’ to Paisley

- By ANGUS WRIGHT

St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin expressed his excitement yesterday at the signing of German striker Collin Quaner.

Quaner will not be available for this afternoon’s Scottish Premiership clash with Motherwelll but will move to Paisley subject to international clearance and should be in the squad for next weekend’s match against St Johnstone.

The 29- year- old German forward joins Goodwin’s side on a deal until the end of the season.

Quaner began his career at Fortuna Dusseldorf in his native Germany, before spells at Arminia Bielefeld, FC Ingolstadt, Hansa Rostock and VFR Aalen before joining Union Berlin in 2015.

His form in Germany’s capital led to a move to English side Huddersfield Town in January 2017, and he helped the Terriers secure promotion to the Premier League before leaving the club in July 2020.

"Collin is a striker who has played at a high level in Germany with Union B erl i n,”

said Buddies manager Goodwin. “Huddersfield bought him from there and he played a number of games i n t he English Premier League. He comes with a real good pedigree and we’re really excited to seewhat Collin can bring to the team.

"He’s six foot three, a really good athlete with a great turn of pace. He’s been training with Schalke for the last couple of months and he’s been looking after himself. We’re very lucky to get him."

St Mirren enjoyed an 11- game unbeaten run before losing to Hibernian on 23 December and bounced back with a victory over Ross County on Boxing Day. They scraped a draw at Kilmarnock in their first match of 2021 and midfielder Jamie Mcgrath is aiming to get back to winning ways when they host Motherwell today.

"D e c e mb e r wa s a g o o d month personally but also a good month for the team,” said Mcgrath, who scored five goals in four matches during their impressive run, culminating with his double in the Betfred Cup quarter- final win over Rangers.

"You have to get the consistency going. We can't be hot one month and cold the next. As a group we have to try and keep t his run going. We will be bouncing into this weekend.”
