Raith climb into second spot with comeback win after Dundee lose key defenders

-

Raith Rovers roared into second place thanks to a 3-1 comeback win over a Dundee side who headed to Kirkcaldy boosted by high-profile signings only to lose the heart of their defence before kick-off.

The Dark Blues gave starting debuts to Malachi Fagan-walcott and Paul Mcmullan, with Jason Cummings coming on later as a substitute, however they lost Lee Ashcroft to illness and Liam Fontaine to injury before kick-off.

Their absence was not felt in the initial stages with Mcmullan picking out Osman Sow to side-foot home on four minutes. However Dundee fell asleep at a corner on 22 minutes. Raith worked the ball to Kai Kennedy and his chipped pass was headed in by Kyle Benedictus.

The home side took the lead nine minutes into the second half when Reghan Tumilty thumped home from 30 yards, with Kennedy curling home the third six minutes later.

The win saw Raith jump above Dundee and manager John Mcglynn said :“The players did not panic and remained patient despite losing an early goal. They then went on to put in a terrific performance.”

Ayr won for the first time in 2021 when they defeated Alloa 4-1 at Somerset Park.

Tom Walsh drilled the hosts into an early lead but Alan Trouten equalised with a freekick from close to the half-way line. Luke Mccowan put Ayr ahead again before Aaron Muirhead rolled in a penalty and Mccowan flicked in the fourth.

Arbroath are off the bottom after Jack Hamilton’s header secured a 1-0 win at Morton.
