The government has ruled out plans to issue so-called "vaccine passports" to enable people who have had the jab against coronavirus to travel abroad.
@Rkelway said: “The Chinese have their digital green pass and they do seem to work. Why can’t we do it? Possibly because other inferior technology solutions have stumped ministers so far so a vaccine passport is probably too complicated, and might even lead to accountability.”
@philrichardsuk posted: “Another landmark in the government doing its best to destroy the foreign travel and tourism industry.”
@jn_lfd stated: “Good! Until everyone has had the option to get the vaccine this should be the case. It would lead to people bringing the virus back and exposing those that haven’t had the option of the vaccine yet. It’s only a holiday, I’d rather regain normal life.”
@gfreeman2012 commented: “So, later in the year and from then on, when other countries demand it for a holiday or travel, UK citizens are in an impossible position – can’t get acceptable proof of vaccination; not allowed in countries without it. I can see a U-turn not far from now.”
@janelixx said: “How many times in the last year have we heard ‘we’re not going to do this and we’re not to do that’ and within weeks the news reports otherwise and minds have been changed? Is it difficult to issue a certificate after your second dose?”
@blancolo commented: “How hard is it to upgrade the information on the chip on the passport?”
@Ribbonrocks observed: “GPS are going to really appreciate hundreds of thousands of patients contacting them asking for a “proof of vaccine” letter when they want to go abroad for their holidays. Very shortsighted of the government.”
@Grahambmrk stated: “Not that long ago you had to have a yellow fever and a typhoid certificate to travel and enter other countries. No-one complained about civil liberties.”
@Marksp24 posted:
“In an international public health crisis evidence of vaccination is simple common sense and could be incorporated into an app.”
@eshmackem added: “This won’t happen until a friend of a friend creates a UK company to produce the passports.”
