Erskine Stewart’s Melville Schools (ESMS) is a pioneer of rounded education in Scotland. From our outdoor learning programme to the technology we use in the classroom, we are leading the way in the provision of outstanding education.

We are a unique family of independent schools for girls and boys in Edinburgh’s West End, offering sector-leading rounded education with outstanding academic results, strong pastoral care and more than 300 extra-curricular activities.

This all-round approach gives every pupil the opportunity to excel and children leave the schools as accomplished, resilient adults, grounded by the nine school values and determined to make a positive mark on the world.

We have won a number of awards and in 2020, we were a finalist for the Independent Girls’ School of the Year Award and the Independent Boys’ School of the Year Award.

At ESMS, we believe we have developed a system that provides children with the best of all educational approaches. Our Diamond Model of education ensures that our children are able to make the best social, emotional and academic progress possible. Through this model, children are taught together from Nursery to Primary 7, then receive the benefits of singlesex education in senior school before joining back together again for our co-educational Sixth Form.

At senior school, the girls attend The Mary Erskine School and the boys Stewart’s Melville College. We understand that boys and girls learn differently at this age, and tailor their teaching accordingly. Taught separately, our girls and boys are free to choose the subjects they enjoy the most and have the freedom to be themselves, gain confidence, and achieve their full potential.

The senior schools are just a mile apart and throughout their senior education, girls and boys continue to enjoy many activities together – from music and drama to outdoor education, sport and trips.

They are also part of a co-educational guidance structure through membership of shared houses. Joining together for their final year of school in sixth form, our students are prepared for the transition to adult life, university and beyond.

We run daily coach services for our pupils across Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife and the Borders. For children who live too far from the Capital to commute daily, our boarding house provides a comfortable, close-knit and happy home from home for children from Primary 6 to Sixth Form.
