Situated in the heart of St Andrews, St Leonards is a forward-thinking, coeducational, boarding and day school which offers a world of opportunities for pupils aged five to 18 to excel academically and develop interests outside the classroom.

St Leonards was named Scotland’s Independent School of the Year 2019 and, for three years running, was listed as the Top Independent Sixth Form in Scotland for IB/A Level results.

The school follows the globally-recognised International Baccalaureate curriculum, praised by students, parents, and admissions officers for its focus on deepening learning, offering wider subject options, and enriching minds.

In Years 1-6 pupils follow the Primary Years Programme (PYP), before progressing to the Middle Years Programme (MYP). In the Sixth Form, students choose either the Diploma Programme (DP) or Career-related Programme (CP). St Leonards was the first school in Scotland to be accredited as an all-through IB school, and is one of just two schools in the UK to actively offer all four programmes.

In line with the IB Learner Profile, pupils are encouraged to be principled, caring, open-minded, knowledgeable, reflective, internationally-minded and balanced inquirers, thinkers, communicators, and risk-takers.

St Leonards enjoys a close partnership with the University of St Andrews, and has an unrivalled location in the centre of the historic town.

Sixth Form students are able to use the university library for their research, while the school’s keen sportsmen and women can access state-of-the-art sports equipment at the university’s Saints Sports Centre.

In addition, there is a stimulating calendar of events at St Leonards delivered by guest speakers from the university on a wide range of topics, and the school appoints an Associate Researcher to help the Sixth Form students develop their independent research skills.

Over the past five years, the boarding houses have undergone an extensive £4 million redevelopment. The renovated houses have beautiful kitchens and spacious communal areas, which are regularly used for fun evening and weekend activities for boarders and day pupils alike. The bedrooms have been fitted with new built-in beds, study spaces, storage, and lighting, and many have sea views beyond the school playing fields. Full, flexi, and weekly boarding is available from age ten.

There are more than 35 co-curricular activities offered at St Leonards, ranging from apiculture to art, dance to drama, and choirs to cross country. Pupils enjoy a jam-packed games programme which encourages both participation and performance in a number of different team and individual sports, and the leading five-tier St Leonards Golf Programme, run in partnership with the St Andrews Links Trust, continues to go from strength to strength.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is the fastest growing of all Scottish independent schools, and an exciting calendar of trips and activities ensures pupils leave St Leonards equipped with the skills, and interests, to succeed in today’s ever-changing world.
