Two layered face masks better at curbing spread of coronavirus

-

Wearing one face covering with at least two layers in it is effective, a health official has said, after US President Joe Biden was pictured wearing two masks.

Public Health England's Dr Susan Hopkins said the guidance was currently still to wear a single face covering with more than two layers.

She said there is "ongoing discussion" on face coverings.

Dr Hopkins told a Downing Street press conference: "We have got a face masks and face coverings advisory group who meet on a regular basis and look at new and emerging evidence, and the US has looked at some of that evidence as well.

"We are in an ongoing discussion about what to do next, but we think one mask that has more than two layers in it is currently effective for the vast majority of the population."

Research published last summer suggested homemade face coverings need to be at least two layers and preferably three to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Thousands of Uber drivers could now be eligible for workplace pension schemes following a landmark Supreme Court judgment, an MP has warned.

The Labour chairman of the House of Commons work and pensions select committee, Stephen Timms, said following the ruling that drivers operating under the taxi app are now considered workers and not self-employed, they may be entitled to auto enrolment into pension schemes.

Mr Timms added that retrospective auto enrolment contributions may need to be paid out to individuals impacted by the landmark judgment.

Last month, the Supreme Court ruled that Uber drivers must be treated as workers rather than selfemployed.

The decision could mean thousands of individuals operating via the app are entitled to minimum wage and holiday pay.

It is thought the the judgment could have wider implications for workplace pensions.
